Solo travel is incredibly powerful. We discover many things about ourselves and are forced outside our comfort zones. This week's travel crush knows all about it, and while she enjoys wandering alone, this week, she's bringing us along for the journey.
Tell us about yourself! Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do? What inspires you to travel?
My name is Andisiwe Mthatyana, and I love traveling. I am based in South Africa and currently working as a Monitoring & Evaluation Practitioner in the public sector. I was not into traveling until 2020, when I was battling depression. My therapist advised that I try new things to help boost my mood. It all started then, and I have never looked back. Traveling makes me feel good. There is something about discovering new spaces that sets my soul on fire.
What do you think is the biggest advantage of solo travel?
For me, solo travel is about connecting with nature, finding my inner peace, and tapping into a different space that helps me see the world differently. Every time I am feeling down, I save and plan for a trip. When I return from traveling, I feel good and see things differently. For me, that is the biggest advantage of solo travel.
What is your advice to those who are interested in starting solo travel?
Try it out! Don't even doubt yourself or whether the trip will be fun or boring. Traveling requires one to be a curious creature that is willing to explore.
What was the most solo traveler-friendly destination you've been to?
Hogsback, South Africa. It's a peaceful and warm little village to visit when you want to escape the city and connect with nature. I was in Hogsback last month for a short hike, and it was worth it! The Panorama Route in Mpumalanga, South Africa, is another solo traveler-friendly destination. In 2021, I went on a solo trip to Mpumalanga, and this particular trip taught me about peace and forgiveness.
As a solo traveler, what characteristics make for the best travel partner?
For me, you must have positive energy, be a fun person and be open to changes that might take place while on the road. Those are things I look for in a travel partner.
