So, it's been a big week for the U.S.A. and we are still glowing from the Black girl magic that has blessed our social media timeline. In keeping with the the sista love, we're profiling a HBCU student (Hampton in the house!) who calls Indianapolis, Indiana home.
Meet DeLia! She's got a sass that won't quit and a taste for adventure. Today, she's sharing what fuels her carefree travel style, some memorable run in's with animals, and why she's got her eye on the Motherland post-Covid.
My most memorable travel moment was swimming with crocodiles in Cabo, Mexico. I remember the crocodile being right in front of me (I was in a glass case by the way). When I went under the water with the GoPro to grab footage, I didn't see the crocodile anymore. I came back up and told the guide that I lost him and the crocodile was right behind me not moving and staring at me. It was as if he was planning to get me lol.
Also, I remember how defiant the monkeys were when I took at trip to Malaysia and visited the Batu Caves. There were so many of them and they would jump on people randomly to steal their food. Literally, I saw a man enjoying his snack when a monkey grabbed it out of his hand. All while a second monkey stole the water bottle out the side pocket of his backpack. The man even put up a fight, but the monkeys still won.
I do not have a specific travel style. Sometimes I like luxury, but most time I am on a budget. I tend to always go over budget for some reason. I am team carry-on, which means I do not prefer to check bags, and almost every trip of I take carry-on luggage only. Most of the time I purchase flight deals, which usually means economy seats. It is very rare that I fly first class. For longer flights, I do always upgrade my seat to be comfortable. I like my airbnb or hotels to be a bit on the luxury side. There's something about waking up in a beautiful home with an amazing view that is therapeutic to me.
Traveling to Israel definitely gave me a spiritual awakening because I took a trip to Jerusalem where the tombstone of Jesus is. They allowed us to lay articles on the stone and pray over it to bless it. After that visit, I felt lighter. It became one of my favorite places because of that experience, specifically.
Once the pandemic is over I want to touch the Motherland. Africa has been on my mind and heart for a while. I want to wait to do my ancestry test so I can travel directly to the country of my roots. However, I believe I should see all of Africa to learn all of our history the right way.
