Travel Crush Tuesday: Genny

Welcome to Travel Crush Tuesday!

Meet Genny! This week we have a globe trotting gyal who calls London (and Toronto!) home. She's packed a lot of travel living into the last five years, and shows no signs of slowing down. Known as GypsyGenz on instagram, she documents her journey to and fro - giving us her unique style and taste for adventure. She shares highlights and words of wisdom as she hits angles in Rio, sits pretty in Dubai, and even while skydiving in Fiji.

Let's jump in and learn more about our diaspora sister's journey. Enjoy!

Tell us more about you. What made you start traveling?

In 2015, I set myself a challenge to travel to 30 destinations before my 30th birthday, I’m proud to say not only did I achieve it but I surpassed it by travelling to 35 destinations!

I started travelling after removing myself from a toxic friendship (contrary to belief, friendships can be toxic too!) and my first trip was a girls holiday to Gran Canaria, an island in Spain. It was a holiday that changed my outlook on life, knowing that even though life can be quite stressful, taking yourself away in the physical as well as the mental form can change situations beyond where you imagine.

What has traveling taught you?

Since that first holiday, I made myself a promise to travel abroad no less than 4 times a year and each year that has extended to the point where in 2019, I travelled 10 times between January & December! I started off as a full time student at university and worked part time but I wanted to show everyone that it is possible to achieve whatever you put your mind to even if you don’t have all the money in the world. For me, travelling is all about gaining experience, learning new things whether that is culture, history or about yourself. It’s a gift I will continue to present to myself because I’ve never had any regret about anywhere I’ve travelled to but I’ve always returned wiser.

How would you describe your travel style?

I would describe my travel style as carefree and adventurous. In my hometown, I seem to be afraid of everything, heights, creepy crawlies, I even jump at my own shadow at the best of times lol, but when I’m traveling, I become a different person, a person who doesn’t let fear stop me from doing anything, I even travel with my hashtag #conqueringfears which has led me to do activities such as skydiving in Fiji, hang gliding in Brazil and the edge walk off the CN Tower in Toronto. My followers have been able to follow my travel journey using my hashtags #30destinationsby30 which then turned into #40destinationsby30 when I extended my travel challenge but then the world was hit with this pandemic so I’ve had to put that on hold for now, but once travel is more safe, I’ll be continuing my journey to 40 destinations, 5 destinations to go!

What is your travel go-to playlist?

Soca music is not only my travel playlist, it’s my everyday playlist. The genre just makes me feel good and happy, most songs even give me goosebumps as they remind me of being back home playing mas at Trinidad Carnival. Soca music gives me a sense of freedom, euphoria if you want to describe it in a nutshell; I am happiest when listening to Soca, wherever I am in the world.

Where can folks find you other than instagram?

I’m currently building both my Youtube channel and my blog pages, both handles are GypsyGenz and will hopefully be launching both if not definitely one by the end of the year.
