While she loves visiting different countries, our Travel Crush is no stranger to exploring her own backyard. She encourages us to see beauty and culture everywhere.
1. Tell us about yourself! Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do? What inspires you to travel?
I'm Jess, British-Ghanaian raised and living in London, UK. I am a doctor by profession and travel started for me as a way to relax during my time off work. The more I traveled, my appetite for it continued to grow.
2. Why is it important to you that you inspire others to find culture at home and abroad?
Travel has elevated my life in so many ways and I want that for everyone which is why I feel so passionate about sharing my experiences. I remember being in Cuba and finding it so unique, yet I didn't personally know anyone who had traveled there before. During that time, I wanted to share my experiences in a way that could be useful. It took off from there with my blog. Traveling, seeing new things firsthand, and meeting people I probably wouldn't have, has helped me to be more appreciative of the world overall.
3. What does it mean to you to find culture?
Finding culture is my way of understanding a place I travel to on a deeper level. Understanding how it shapes the locals and traditions in all aspects of life, enjoying the local food, learning about important history and cultural events, and feeling like you've really seen a place.
4. What is your #1 tip for being a tourist at home? How can others find adventure in their own backyard?
Being a tourist in your backyard is about trying something new - that could be a new event, a new city or place within your city or somewhere beautiful in the countryside. I recommend searching through hashtags on social media for up to date places and new hidden spots - it's helped me find so many places over the past couple of years.
5. What was your coolest staycation experience? What about it blew you away?
When I visited the Cotswolds last summer for my birthday. The Cotswolds are a large "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" in the English countryside covering 5-6 different counties. It's made up of various beautiful villages and is the perfect place for an idyllic getaway especially on a summer's day. I spent my days there visiting various lakes, castles, going for country walks and stayed in the most beautiful Airbnb. It was perfect!
