Travel and fashion have long shared borders, and Marjorie, our Travel Crush Tuesday, is a jetsetter who takes her sense of style wherever she goes. Read along to learn more about her passions.
1. Tell us about yourself! Who are you? Where are you from? What do you do? What inspires you to travel?
Hey, my name is Marjorie Luchiri. I am half Kenyan and half Ugandan. I was born and raised in the UK. I first learned Luganda because my mum said I wasn't British, and I learned English in school. I am currently transitioning industries and will speak about it once I feel more confident in the industry I am going to. What inspires me to travel is I love to see how the locals live their day-to-day life. I also love the history of the country. To me, it makes the country what it is today. I love fashion, so going to different countries inspires me to get dressed up or down.
2. What is your top tip for always looking good on the go?
Dress comfortably! I only recently discovered this! Can you imagine! So if you don't know, there is a saying that says don't die for fashion, which I interpret as don't be uncomfortable for fashion. Well, once upon a time, I was out in these streets dying for fashion. Funny story, I went to the Amalfi coast, and almost all my outfits were uncomfortable in one way or another. On one of the days, my slippers broke as we were on our way to a boat tour, and I had to wear wedges walking down a mountain! It got to a point where I couldn't take it anymore, so I walked around barefoot until we found a store that was selling slippers. The moral of the story is to research the activities you're going to do on the island or country and dress appropriately. Be smart if you are going to create content or your home is too far, and you have to wear more than one outfit. Make it a two-in-one outfit if you're going to the beach. Wear a dress on top or something that can easily be taken off, and don't die for fashion like I once did.
The first thing that I do is hashtag the location on Instagram and see what other people have done in that location. Then I do a Google images search on the location to better understand the place. I also do a background check on the country to know what the country is like. For example, when planning my trip to Morocco, I had to ensure I dressed appropriately, as I know the country is predominantly Muslim. In Islam, women have to dress modestly. I wore a dress with no sleeves with a jacket, and then when I found a place where it was appropriate to take off my jacket for a picture, I did that. I try to be respectful everywhere I go and avoid offending the natives of the country. I also check the weather. I want my outfits to be suitable for the weather. Like I said previously, don't die for fashion. I also check with people I know have been to ask them questions and get a better idea of what to expect. Still, I always go into a country with an open mind because not everybody's experiences are the same.
4. What is one piece that will always be in your vacation wardrobe?
A hoodie, jumper, cardigan, or something warm is my best friend no matter where I go. No matter how hot a country is, it tends to get colder at night. And when it comes to unexpected weather changes, I'm covered.
5. Which destination has the best-dressed locals? Why?
It is between the UK and Paris. However, if I had to pick, it would be the UK because of the diversity in fashion. Everyone puts their own style together, and it works for them. It also inspires me to see people dress in their own uniqueness.
